Standings for 'Round-the-Buoys' Twilight Series
July 26, 2003

The sailboat races in Rockland Harbor sponsored by the Rockland Yacht Club last week were buried in fog. On Tuesday evening fog settled in so thick the race committee had difficulty seeing the flag end of the finish line. Five Etchells (E22) and three PHRF cruising sailboats groped their way around an abbreviated windward-leeward course for two races in each class. Winds were between five and ten knots out of the southwest providing a relative fast series of races. Safety is a concern, more so in a fog bound working harbor. The course was restricted to the south end avoiding most of the commercial traffic. Nevertheless a tow appeared out of the fog midway through the second race to add excitement and crossed the finish line five minutes ahead of the PHRF boats. Standings for the Tuesday night 'Round-the-Buoys series through July 22nd have Elliott Lowe of Thomaston in the Etchells (E22) one design leading with an averaged low point score before throw outs of 1.53. In the PHRF Cruising Class boats Walkabout, a Tartan 10 Meter owned by Doug and Beth Pope of Warren well out in front with an averaged low point score based on corrected time before throw outs of 1.07 for eight races sailed. .

Race Results of the Rockland-Northport Regatta
July 12 & 13, 2003

Reported by Dave Hoy

The Rockland-Northport Regatta, a joint sponsorship of two days of racing by the Rockland Yacht Club and Northport Yacht Club, last Saturday and Sunday, included fifteen yachts. The first race on Saturday began at the breakwater in Rockland and finished at the Northport Yacht Club in Bayside on West Penobscot Bay, a distance of approximately twenty-two miles with a return race the next day. With moderate SW winds on Saturday the spinnakers popped out soon after the start at 11:00 AM and most boats were able to carry them all the way in a colorful parade northward. The course lay through Gilkey Harbor on Islesboro. By that time the wind had piped up to ten to fifteen knots with seas building providing a roller coaster ride. All boats finished shortly after 2:00 PM, a relatively fast race of somewhat over three hours. Results of the first leg had Ken and Susan Priest's Extra Beat, a J-35 from Rockland with the shortest elapsed time but lost it on corrected time to Secret Water, an Allied Seabreeze 35 from Northport Y.C. Second on corrected time was Velero, a Ranger 26 from Northport Y.C. and third on corrected time was Wyanoke, a Catalina 27 from Rockland Y.C. owned by Dave and Anne Hoy of Camden.

The return race on Sunday that began in light to moderate southerly winds in the morning developed into a day of combating increasing winds and grueling tacking duels against fifteen to twenty knots and gusts over twenty. While the start off the Northport Yacht Club was in moderate winds, after the first hour there developed patches of calm and somewhat shifting winds generally from the south. Some boats had gone inshore while a few stayed out. As the new air came in the lagging offshore boats benefited and the inshore boats found the lagging fleet offshore catching up. As the winds continued to pick up the seas built to three to four feet. Soon the fleet was stretched out again with the larger boats leading the parade of tacking boats who by this time were rail down, somewhat over powered and slugging their way south making for uncomfortable conditions aboard. The last boat in finished at 4:30 PM, a six hour blow out.

On final corrected time for the regatta Celerity, a Farr Northstar 727 yacht from Northport succeeded with a first in the second race and that was good enough with a fourth in the first race to be first overall. Extra Beat of the Rockland Yacht Club came in second in the second race and finished number two overall. Apogee, an Olson 38 from Northport took third in the second race and finished third overall, having a sixth in the first race.

Solstice Race
June 21, 2003

In winds ranging from very light to fifteen knots with higher gusts, shifting from the northeast to southeast and finally generally from the south to southwest, on a rare and beautiful day last Saturday, the annual Solistice Race sponsored by the Rockland Yacht Club was held on appropriately the first day of real summer. The course was laid out over west Penobscot Bay, a race of slightly more than fourteen nautical miles. Entries were open for PHRF handicap sailboats. Of the boats reporting, on corrected time, Elvis Tuna, an Etchells 22, owned by Dave Jones of Rockport took first place; Sea Jab, a Sabre 362, owned by Al and Jill Canbra Hodsdon of Rockland placed second; third place went to Dave and Anne Hoy's Wyanoke, a Catalina 27 from Camden; fourth place was Rumpleteaser, a J24 owned by Jim and Kathy Cuthbertson of Rockland; and, Adventure, a Sabre 30-3 owned by Marshall and Sandra Cary of Rockland/Camden placed fifth.

Following are the corrected times for five of the six boats started for the 14.3 nautical miles:

1. Elvis Tuna 3:02:24
2. Sea Jab 3:04:12
3. Wyanoke 3:11:24
4. Rumpleteaser 3:16:00
5. Adventure 3:22:12
