Marshall Cary's Account of the Bayside Race, 2003.

The first finishing RYC boat today was Dave Hoy's Wyanoke at 3rd, and next was my boat, Adventure, at 5th. This is, of course, based on corrected PHRF numbers. The boat with the shortest total elapsed time was Ken and Susan Priest's Extra Beat. We had an unusual incident when, with Adventure out in front of the fleet, one of my crew members, Arthur Jones, apparently lost his balance and fell off the stern of Adventure into the bay. We had the spinnaker up at the time, and were doing about 5.5 knots downwind, but acted quickly to pull the chute down and get the boat turned around. Using the Lifesling System purchased last year, and the stern boarding ladder, we managed to get him back onboard, wet but unhurt. By the time we completed this real life man overboard drill a number of boats had passed us. We got the spinnaker back up and reset and, while Arthur changed into dry clothes, rejoined the race. I don't recommend practicing man overboard drills while under spinnaker. By chance, I had spoken to my crew before the start of the race about the forecast for significant ocean swells, and had discussed the importance of observing caution in order to stay onboard if the seas became rough. Fortunately, we never lost sight of Arthur in the water, and the crew was able to coordinate his recovery. We're going to present him with a special "Swimmers' Award" for his participation in the race.
