December, 2004

Rockland Yacht Club

  • P.O. Box 99, Rockland, ME 04841

  • Web Site: www.Rocklandyc.org

December 11, 2004, Samoset. Christmas banquet for RYC. Enclosed is a sign up sheet. Get your notification in early to Mike Sadano. Mike and Bruce have some special entertainment events for the evening. Bruce, I don’t need to paint my bottom this year. We made it through Bracket’s Channel without communing with that sand bar.

Northport Yacht Club has also been invited to our banquet. We share a lot in common even when the weather is cold and our babies are on the hard.

January 2005 Meeting, 3:00 p.m.– Details of January’s meeting will be forwarded in that newsletter but the date and time are set.

Commodore Comments

Our November meeting with Harbormaster Ed Glaser was very informative. Ed is worried about the home-built schooner in the harbor. He cares about us all.

Events for next summer will include a visit by the New York Yacht Club. Some members feel we should do something to welcome them to Rockland. Doug Pope is thinking of a Penobscot Rally and Ed says we can work out a deal to occupy the City docks for the events.

Many members at the meeting felt that Rockland has become an “Event City”. If RYC wants to become more active, we may need to participate in the events. An example might be Lobster fest day for RYC.

Minutes of November 14, 2004

The meeting opened at 3:22 p.m. The Commodore introduced Rockland Harbormaster Ed Glaser and said that Ed would be speaking to us later in the program. Al then asked for the Treasurer’s report and Gary Cran obliged, saying that the financial situation is unchanged from the last report.

Next subject was “Membership Drive”. Al explained that Diane Hebert, who was absent, is Membership Secretary and not responsible for recruitment. A Membership Committee is needed and Al mentioned that Robin McIntosh is interested in helping. “How about you, Toni (Vander Veer)?” Toni demurred. Ed Glaser offered to see whether a list or labels of all mooring owners in the harbor could be obtained from his computer. And how about Corporate Membership? There were other suggestions, much discussion and several anecdotes.

Al reminded members about the Christmas Party. Mike Sodano is working up the menu with the Samoset. The forms should go off at the end of the week. Bruce Stedman is organizing the entertainment.

Al wants a “Flag Etiquette” person for RYC and appointed Ivan Hills. Some joshing. He would also like a subcommittee to organize “Surprise Weekends” for cruisers and suggested that the Vander Veers, Bentzels and Keagans might consider doing this for the 2005 season. Al suggested having one cocktail party each month, on a Friday evening, during the season. Fund raising for charity? Will confer with Dave Jones. Any members going south, or who have already departed? Apparently, none!

The next Members’ meeting will be held January 15, 2005, 3:00 p.m. at ACF (most likely).

Ed Glaser then gave his talk.

RYC Racers

Race Committee Chair Doug Pope is taking suggestions for events and methods for 2005. All ideas are welcome even sailing backwards. My best idea was lobster pot holding. Certainly there is a best form especially during no wind and strong tide. Walkabout was practicing this very maneuver right in the middle of the Around Isleboro race. He had great form but received no credit for it. There were the correct number of expletives and voices were all an octave higher.

Cruisers

M.J. Shiverick is taking ideas for next seasonscruisers. Again, any suggestions will be welcome.

Christmas Gifts

Sharon Stedman is graciously handling the RYC clothes orders. Give her a call at 236-6217 to get your order in for Christmas. Mothers-in-law love all this yachty stuff. They can show it off to all their friends.

Book Signing

Peggy McCrea brought a few dozen of her books for signing at the November 14th meeting. I got my three (3) copies for Christmas. One for my sailor father, one for my artist daughter, and one for my mother-in-law who just loves me. Thanks Peggy.

Master of Etiquette

I have appointed Senior Seaman Ivan Hill to be our master of etiquette to rule on such matters. I am appropriately impressed with Ivan’s stories of yachting on the Thames. All who know Ivan are sure to enjoy his comments and rulings.
