Commodore Comments

The Rockland Yacht Club has a lot to be proud of and a lot going for it. We have world cruises, famous racers, accomplished artists and published authors and that is just in one family. We have young sailors and we have old sailors, we had father/son race teams and husband and wife crews. But we all have one thing in common, and that is the love of boating. Although, the weather did not cooperate in the summer of 2004, RYC had an active season. We had an active cruising program with several cruises. There was Tuesday night racing and Saturday racing. We had several boats in the Downeast 1-2 Plus and Around Isleboro was well attended.

Some new efforts occurred this year. We raised over $2,000 for the local food pantry (Area Interfaith Outreach) – Good Job Sailors! We also started a Friday cocktail party to start a weekend.

For next year (2005), we are going to start with fixing the weather. I have Bruce and Mike working on that right now. We are hoping to continue with our programs and to expand some. One change is that when it comes to kissing the women, the Commodore reserves all rights.

Minutes of Lobster Picnic

RYC Annual General Meeting (Sept. 25, 2004) at Rockport Boat Club, after the end of season Lobster Picnic. Approximately 55 members attended.

The retiring Commodore, Bruce Stedman, opened the meeting at 5:40 p.m. and expressed our thanks to the members who worked in the kitchen, cooked the lobsters and steaks, and generally assisted in this annual RYC tradition. He also commended Maryjane Shiverick for her photograph albums of club cruises and social occasions. This was followed by humorous “Brucisms” and a proposal to members that the MINUTES of the April 18 meeting (published in the May Newsletter) are taken as read. Carried by acclamation: The meeting proceeded:

Treasurer Report: The Commodore then called for the Treasurer’s Report and Gary Cran responded:

We have $15,482 in the operating fund and $7,720 in reserve. Of the latter, about $4,000 is allocated to the piling for the dinghy dock. The year-to-date Dinghy Dock income is $3,100. General revenue is down because membership is down, and currently expenses exceed income by $3,100. A deficit of $2,000 is forecast for 2004”.

In response to questions from the floor about funds allocation to the Dinghy Dock, Bruce explained why incorrect orientation of the float, necessitated by absence of the promised piling, undoubtedly accounts for members disinclination to take up the available spaces and contribute their $200. While arrangements with ACF for 2005 are not yet firm if RYC stays, the float situation must be resolved if its full revenue capacity is to be attained. Bruce then called for a motion to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Proposed by Toni Vanderveer; seconded by Dave Shiverick. The Ayes have it.

The Commodore then introduced the Chairman of the Race Subcommittee, Doug Pope, who summarized the racing season and highlighted successes of RYC boats. He thanks the Race Committee members for their efforts, especially in regards to the Tuesday night series and the Solstice Race. He then presented the Annual Sportsmanship Award to Val Beemis for her untiring attendance at the barbecue grill on race nights and race social occasions (Good Job, Val). The Golden Mermaid trophy could not be presented because it is missing. A search is underway.

The RYC raffle in aid of AREA INTERFAITH OUTREACH produced over $2,000. Miss Violet Beemis drew a single ticket and the winner was Father Mark Reinhardt of Saint Bernard’s Church. Congratulations Father Reinhardt!

Nomination and Conformation of Officers

The slate, posted as follows:

Commodore: Albert Hodsdon Vice Commodore: Charles Faulkingham Rear Commodore: Maryjane Shiverick Secretary: Ivan Hills (incumbent) Treasurer: Gary Cran (incumbent)

The retiring Commodore, Bruce Stedman asked if there were further nominations from the floor. There being none, asked for a motion to accept the slate. Proposed by Bill Keegan; seconded by Cheri Hutchinson. By acclamation – the AYES have it.

Bruce then presented the Commodore’s Flag to Al and received in turn a Past Commodore’s Flag.

The New RYC Commodore then addressed members briefly: “Thank you Bruce for your excellent services as Commodore. RYC members should always keep in mind that the purpose of a club, especially a yacht club, is to have fun. Our activities are for recreation!

There followed some exchange of gifts and humorous remarks. Then Al asked for a motion to adjourn. Proposed by Charles Falkingham; seconded by Maryjane Shiverick. The AYES have it and the meeting closed at 6:15 p.m.
