May 2004 Newsletter

Saturday May 8: RYC race committee will be sponsoring a seminar, "The Racing Rules of Sailing" on May 8 at the Rockport Boat Club from 10am - 1pm. It is open to anyone interested in sailing and racing. Presenters will be Tim Tolford, a certified US Sailing judge from Portland, and Dave Whiting, a certified US Sailing Club Race Official and level two coach. Dave has conducted races for the Jr. Olympics, collegiate and high school sailing events and has been a judge for collegiate regattas. The cost of the seminar is $8.

Saturday May 15: RYC Spring Fling Picnic at the Rockport Boat Club will start at 4:30pm. Performing again this year will be Rockland's Community Steel Drum Band. Bring everything you would need for a picnic and hors d’oeuvre to share. Cost is $5.00 per adult with children 12 and under free. The club will supply enough charcoal and grills, soda and mixers for all. This is a BYOB. Directions – Rockport – take the driveway by the photographic workshop; go to Rockport Marine; take a right and follow to the boat club. Question on the directions – call Bruce (sometimes lost) Stedman

From the Commodore's locker:

It was great having Rockland Harbormaster Ed Glaser attend the April meeting. Ed told us of his boating history in Maine waters and vision for Rockland Harbor. Ed fielded many questions from the members present.

Al Hodsdon tells me some dinghy spots are available at Atlantic Challenge. Interested … contact Al at 453-6061.

Maryjane Shiverick is asking members to bring photographs of their boats/themselves to the spring picnic (or mail them to MJ). MJ is creating a photo club history to be passed about during club meetings and events.

What an exciting time of year for us BOAT OWNERS. We get to test our senses. Smell – bottom paint to cleaners … touch – wax on wax off … sight – all the things that need to be done (cry, cry) … hearing – that will only cost $750 to fix … Taste – what did I leave in the food locker from last season … but it’s true, we do love it.

Remember to bring guests to the spring picnic at the Rockport Boat Club. Members who attend will receive the 2004 club roster. Rosters will be mailed later in May.

A detailed cruise schedule and brief outline of the racing schedule are in this newsletter. Sincerely,

Bruce Stedman

Housing for two AC Instructors:

Information from Woofie Parker Yachtwoof@Juno.com Atlantic Challenge: 594 - 1800

Atlantic Challenge is looking for housing for two of its Community Sailing Program instructors. The Atlantic Challenge Apprentice house, where instructors have stayed in the past, is going to be full this summer. AC really needs to locate a home for Stoddard Pierce and Sandra Wyman. They are prepared to pay something toward this.

A quick bio as follows: Stoddard Pierce: graduating from Middlebury College this May; head instructor at Harraseeket, Yacht Club in South Freeport; taught sailing at Pleon in Marblehead for the past two years. Sandra Wyman: finishing her freshman year at Univesity of Michigan; captain of the sailing club at Exeter.
