Commodore's Locker, It was great having club member Peter McCrea as our guest speaker. Peter told us how he prepares for single handed offshore sailing. It was very informative for even members who sail the bay. Peter came in 1st place overall combined in the Bermuda 1, 2, 2003 Race. The annual RYC Holiday Party will be held at the Samoset, Saturday, December 13. The reservation form is in this newsletter. Reservation must be returned no later than December 9. Reservations made after this date will be returned as the club will have signed a contract with the Samoset. The cruise committee is off to a great start. Chair Maryjane Shiverick informs me that Moria Bentzel, Jon Kuhl, Geoff Pitchford, and Taylor Vaughan have joined the team. Other interested members please contact MJ. Maryjane has put together a most enjoyable binder containing photographs and stories of this past season cruising events. The binder will be available for viewing at meetings. The race committee has co-chairs Patti Denise, David Jones, and Dave Hoy. Joining the team as a committee member is Jack Callaghan. Interested members wishing to join the committee are asked to contact one of the co-chairs. The activities committee still has no chair or committees members. If you are interested please contact Bruce Stedman. This committee plans events such at the spring fling, lobster picnic, holiday party, and club speakers. All plans associated with this group are being put on hold. I will not be at the November meeting and Vice Commodore Al Hodsdon will take my place. I have a difficult November coming up playing golf and boating with my brother in Florida but someone has to do it. See you all at the holiday party in December. Bruce Stedman MINUTES:RYC Meeting Oct 19, 2003 at ACF The Commodore called the meeting to order at 3:04 pm, introduced the new officers and executive committee and proceeded to the first item. 1. Bruce called for a motion to accept the minutes of the September 27 meeting; proposed by Gary Cran, seconded by Mike Sodano. The "ayes" have it but with a request by David Hoy for a small correction, to wit: His request in regard to the Saturday races should be quoted as "another body and a boat ". 2. Treasurer's report. Gary Cran made a written report available for members to inspect while at the meeting. He commented that RYC is in good shape with about $16,000 operating fund and $6500 reserve, although most of the reserve is for the long awaited piling for the dinghy float. Revenue is about $6400 ahead of last year, due to increased membership. However, a rent payment to ACF is due shortly and expenses for the Holiday Party are anticipated. "If membership stays up RYC will remain in good shape." 3. Bruce introduced his wife Sharon as the new sales manager of RYC regalia, clothing and sundries. Sharon presented new items and invited members to inspect the display after the meeting. Dave Hoy revealed the new flag he had purchased for the race committee boat. 4. RYC Website: The bulletin board had been shut down due pornographic material (from a Russian source) being advertised thereon. Dave Hoy said this will be a problem for non-member crews postings and wondered whether there is not a technical remedy. Bruce promised to consult the Webmaster, Taylor Vaughan . 5. Bruce asked whether any one could store the club's dock cart and gas grill for the winter. Suggestions were made but the matter was unresolved. 6. Al Hodsdon will be Administrator of the Dinghy Dock for 2004. This means paper work with members. Bruce will remain contact person for ACF. 7. Bruce reported that RYC had received a letter from ACF thanking those members who carried on their boats, parents of children in the ACF Sailing Program. This allowed parents a close up view of their kids performing. Gary and Bruce were the providers and both ventured that the experience was most rewarding. 8.The Holiday Party is confirmed for December 13 at the Samoset. 9. Members were advised: Use of RYC name or facilities in conjunction with other organizations must first be approved by RYC Executive Committee. Similarly for expenditure of funds or disposal of club assets. Individual members should submit proposals in writing to a member of the executive who will then bring it before the committee. Alternatively, chairmen of the three sub-committees (Cruise, Race and Activities) can receive proposals and make them verbally to the executive. 10. The Commodore introduced the membership form for 2004. This has been simplified. I will go by regular mail, not email, with the December newsletter to all members. 11. Maryjane Shiverick, Cruise Committee chair, requested suggestions for the 2004 program. In particular, a date for the Icebreaker. June 5 or 12? Mike Sodano and Geoff Pitchford will serve on the Cruise Committee and members can suggest venues and dates to them as well as the chair. 12. Bruce, once again, pointed out that the Activities Chair is vacant. Indeed we do not have an activities committee. Volunteers please, when the membership form is completed. Right now, members of the executive manage Activities and this cannot continue through 2004. 13. Other business. Dave Hoy requested email addresses of (racing) members. He got them. He then described the proposed courses in the Bay for both fleets. Bruce displayed a club cap and sunglasses left at the lobster picnic. Surely some one must miss these items? Contact Bruce. Dave Shiverick suggested a type of race, possibly useful as a fund-raiser, where the start is at the dock, power to the line but cross under sail with the gun. There being no further business the Commodore requested a motion to close - proposed by Dave Shiverick, seconded by Dick Bentzel. The "ayes" have it and the meeting closed at 3.35 pm.
Respectfully submitted, Ivan Hills, secretary.
The RYC thanks Dave Hoy for the donation of two race committee flags.
