Commodore's Message:
Dear RYC Members,
I want to thank Ivan Hills for the new 'look' of the newsletter. I can type more (to the dismay of members) on one page.

I want to welcome aboard new club members:
Marshall and Sandra Cary sailing ADVENTURE, a Sabre 30 from Rockland / Camden,
David and Anne Hoy sailing WYANOKE, a Catalina 30 from Rockland,
Doug Koeppen sailing a Cape Cod Goldeneye 18
Helen & Jon Kuhl sailing CHERUB, an Alberg 30 from Rockport,
Bruce and Gail Sinclair sailing CHICORY, a Bristol 35 from Rockland
Taylor Vaughan and daughter Elizabeth sailing GREAT BEAR, a Grampian from Rockland

Boat U.S. and the RYC have a cooperating group agreement. On your Boat U.S. renewal use GA80262Y and get half off your basic membership.

Things are getting busy around the RYC planning table. MJ Shiverick sat down with the cruise committee on February 15 and firmed up dates. Some location descriptions are vague as wind and weather will help to control the adventure. Last year was a very successful cruising season with many participating members. Members are invited to join at any location and don't have to feel obligated to stay the entire cruise. Some members have talked about an unofficial cruise to Nova Scotia in July (the club had an unofficial cruise that way about three years ago ... and all returned ... five or so boats participated)
If members are interested in racing but don't have (enough) crew... I always need an extra person to get my coffee (just like Ken Priest) or sing songs (just like Doug Pope) or pass the crying towel (am I in trouble yet Gary)... or who want to race on a boat other than their own then the meeting in April is just the cure. The place and time will be posted later.

Sincerely, Bruce Stedman

Secretary's Minutes
RYC General Meeting, February 15, 2003 at ACF
Attendance: 24 members

1. The Commodore opened the meeting with humor, welcomed guests (of the Vander Veer's) John and Helen Kuhl. He also announced that the Sag Harbor Yacht Club (Long Island, NY) has invited members of RYC to visit and use their facilities. Bruce then presented an award to Mary Jane Shiverick. He called the meeting to order at 4.25 pm.
2. Bruce mentioned that club member Marshall Cary is now a director of the Maine Retired Skippers Race. This race is usually the third Saturday in August. You don't need to be retired to be in the race but a retired skipped can (will) be assigned as the helmsman. Interested members can contact Marshall at MarshallCary2000@aol.com or 207-862-2100
3. The Commodore referred to the Secretary's Report for the January 19 meeting (published in the February Newsletter): "If there is no request to read it, I would like a motion to accept!" The motion was made by Bob Pratt and seconded by Dave Shiverick. The "ayes" prevailed.
4. The Commodore explained the absence of Gary Cran and requested a proposal to postpone the Treasurer's Report until the March 16 meeting. This was supplied by Mike Sodano and seconded by Bob Pratt. The "ayes" prevailed.
Old Business:
5. Bruce referred to members' concerns in regard to use of ACF facilities, these being raised at the January 19 meeting. Bruce reported that he would have a formal meeting with Warren Kaericher, of ACF, before the March meeting but meanwhile the following can be stated.
a. Float capacity is 20 dinghies at present. Eighteen are taken up, so far.
b. Use of the pier and facilities by members not having dinghy space is in order but for short periods only.
c. Fresh water supply at the end of the pier is expected for the 2003 season.
Items to be discussed with ACF:
a. Disposal of minor amounts of trash.
b. Accessibility of meeting room, bathroom, times open, et cetera.
c. Crowding of T-Dock, which prevents short-term use by RYC members.
d. Use of the Pope Sails transport carts, and abuse by ACF.
e. An extra item, raised by a member: "Use of ACF ramp by RYC members who trailer their boats"?
New Business
6. Reporting for the Race Committee, Dave Jones said he would e-mail members the date, time and place of a Race Meeting to be held in April. Dave spoke in favor of continuing RYC and Rotary Club sponsorship of club race functions with Gerrit Vander Veer as liaison. Race dates are listed in the events calendar.
7. Reporting for the Cruise Committee, Mary Jane Shiverick gave the dates and general locations of summer cruise schedule. Cruise dates are listed in the events calendar.
8. RYC Spring "Picnic". Bruce explained that a small charge would be necessary to defray cost of the "Steel Band" and that the executive committee had determined $5 per adult with accompanied children under twelve free; members to bring their own entr‚e, suitable for grilling, salad, et cetera, and hors d'oeuvre for communal use. The club will provide sodas and mixers. A motion to accept the $5 charge was made by Gerritt Vander Veer, seconded by Dave Jones. The "ayes" prevailed.
9. Bruce reported: (a) "Only 75-80 membership renewals received to date!" and commented: "Get your renewal form and check in by March 15 if you want to be in the 2003 Club Roster." (b) The executive committee has determined that RYC web page was too expensive to redesign and maintain, for the moment. However, the Web Name registration fee will be paid, against future use.
10. Toni Vander Veer presented the new RYC sweaters and T-shirts and offered the remainder of club mugs at $3 each. Also recipes are needed if the cook book is to become a reality.
11. Gus Stringos spoke of a race from Gloucester to Rockland to be held on July 26/27 by the Annisquam Yacht Club, who have requested assistance from RYC in regard to the finish-line and facilities for post-race reception. Interested RYC members in racing can look at the following web site: www.annisquamyc.org/downeast.html
12. Al Hodsdon urged RYC members to be responsive to Annisquam and was invited by the Commodore to make this a Proposal, which being done was seconded by Bill Keegan. The "ayes" prevailed.
13. There was further general discussion of members' interest in sponsoring Junior Sailing and the Maine Scholarship Fund with Rockland Rotary Club, as well as co-operation with other clubs, such as Northport and Annisquam.
14. There being no further business, the Commodore asked for a motion to adjourn and received response from Dave Jones and Mary Jane Shiverick. "So moved."

Respectfully submitted: Ivan Hills - secretary
