RYC Christmas Party: Saturday December 9 at the Samoset. Details below.
From the Commodore's boatswain's chair:
It is quite an honor to become the second ìLadyî Commodore of the Rockland Yacht Club, following the precedent setting nomination of Ginnie Torney well over 20 years ago.
During the past five years since Gerritt and I became members, our enjoyment of sailing in this wonderful area of the world was made more enjoyable by becoming active members of the Club.
We owe our heartfelt thanks to Dick Bentzel (and his able first mate, Moira), to the Cruising Committee led by Mike Sodano (who also wears the hat of Secretary), to the Racing program led by Doug Pope, to the ad hoc ìNew Homeî committee headed by Neil Woodside, to Bill and Jean Keegan for arranging for interesting speakers at monthly Club meetings, to Arthur Frieder, our trusty Treasurer, and to all the various other committees and volunteers.
We as Club members, have all been able to enjoy these programs because of the dedication and hard work of a core group of volunteers who have given so selflessly of their time and energy- Thank you all!!
As I accept this leadership role, I would like to work with the membership to develop a vision for the future of the club and to begin with, outline some of the issues that need to be addressed.
First, I think we must continue to encourage membership participation in Club activities, and to increase the number of members who volunteer to make our programs possible.
Second, we need to resolve the issue of providing the Club membership with affordable access to Rockland Harbor. We should increase our efforts in this area because the Harbor is rapidly changing. The growth of the waterfront over the next few years makes our active pursuit of this initiative very important to our boating interests.
Third, the need to create a dialogue to determine whether the purpose of our Club as defined in Article II of the by-laws, is in line with our current and future needs.
While our membership is currently at over 200, only a relatively small nucleus is actively involved in the Club activities. I encourage all of you to please think about why you joined RYC and how we can work together to make your ideas of membership responsibility work for you.
In closing, I look forward to working with all of you to make the year 2001 boating season the best ever.
Toni Vander Veer, Commodore
New November Meeting Location
After many years at the Navigator, it was decided to have the November meeting at the Chamber of Commerce Building, the original site of the RYC. Coffee will be provided but for those who prefer otherwise, we have been granted permission for BYOB (not to exceed beer and/or wine). Please plan accordingly.
OCTOBER PICNIC AND ELECTION MEETING MINUTES
After an afternoon of socializing and a great lobster (and steak) dinner, the meeting was called to order by Commodore Dick at 5:15 PM. About 70 members (and guests) including all officers were present.
The Secretary's report as published in the last newsletter was accepted as it appeared. Treasurer, Arthur Frieder reported that we have a total of just over $17,00 in the various RYC accounts. His report was accepted. Outgoing Commodore Dick announced that next year's Lobster Picnic will be on the last Saturday in September, 2001.
Dick thanked Moira for doing all the work for the past two years, which resulted in an enthusiastic applause.
The election of Officers followed. With no nominations offered from the floor, unanimously elected were: Commodore, Toni Vander Veer; Vice Commodore, Charles Faulkingham; Rear Commodore, Gary Cran; Secretary, Mike Sodano; Treasurer, Arthur Frieder. An appreciative round of applause was given to new, continuing and outgoing officers

A post picnic/meeting comment: As most of us know, Commodore Dick's and Moira's boat, Natalie B escaped from her mooring the day before, a problem they didn't need the day before the Picnic. Fortunately, the damage wasn't boat-threatening but they would like to thank all of those who came to the rescue for picnic set-up and clean-up. To name a few (not an all-inclusive list), they are: the Stedmans, Aleta (Mike helped a little), Taxes, VanderVeers (and Gerritt for steak chef-ing), George (the lobster man) Kibitz, Arthur Frieder, Jane Hennings, etc.
THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT WILL NOT BE REPEATED. PLEASE REMOVE YOUR PROCRASTINATION HATS AND ACT NOW
