Icebreaker Cruise - June 6-7
Event Highlights
Cruising across Penobscot Bay with the sun on our shoulders and a cool breeze blowing, Pulpit Harbor and the Icebreaker Cruise were a welcome respite from the cold and rainy weather we’d experienced lately. George and I were hosting the cruise and hoping to greet everyone as they arrived, but MJ and Dave Shiverick aboard Webfoot and Julie and Rick Palm aboard Altair were already there, and greeted us. Lucky them, they had spent the night before in the harbor.
Steve Pierce aboard Spirits was an early arrival. We were pleased to see Julie and Lynn Mecham arrive on their power boat, Dream Catcher, with their dog Lucy (short for Lucifer). They were guests of members Gini and Bill Fiedler who cruised in soon after on their power boat, Mary-Allison with their dog, Denny. Toni and Gerritt Vander Veer with their dog, Brandy aboard Persephone and Susan and Ed Neisingh aboard Northwind cruised in later. That made a total of 15 members and guests on 8 boats.
What a welcome surprise to see so many pets. One very clever dog, Brandy, who was enclosed below deck and barking, managed to escape and, standing on deck, gave her owners, Gerritt and Toni the evil eye while they were visiting the Palms on Altair
.
George inflated our rubber canoe, which resembles a big gherkin pickle, and we paddled around to greet everyone. The air leaked from one side and we almost sank! So much for safety on the water, but we were wearing our life jackets. Getting wet seemed to be the theme of the cruise. Our gherkin was no match in the rowing department for the Palm’s new peapod, recently completed by the apprentices at Atlantic Challenge. The peapod had been launched for the first time on Friday, so it still sported a bouquet of flowers on its bow.
After lunch, 11 of us met at the public dinghy dock (2 couples had not yet arrived), and took a nice walk to the country store. Luckily, they served ice cream. Walking and talking is such a nice way to get to know people whom you don’t see often. George and I felt fortunate to be asked by Helen and Jon Kuhl to host the cruise in their place while they were attending a family high school graduation.
The Fiedler’s and Mecham’s rafted together and at 5PM, Gini and Bill hosted happy hour(s) aboard their boat. Thanks, guys! A nice time was had by all.
Afterward, we all retired to our boats for a quiet dinner. As the sun set, the chill of the night air sent us below deck. Most lights were out early.
George got some outstanding early Sunday morning photos of the sun beginning to rise over the harbor and of the boats at anchor.
We awoke on Sunday to a mixture of sun and clouds, another nice day on the water. After coffee and visits with other boats, we left the harbor, rather slowly while savoring our time on the water. We talked of future cruises and meeting again …..
